The Resurrection, oil on canvas, 120 x 160 cm. Photographer: Christophe Canato.

In this portrayal of The Resurrection, I created a billboard-style image using a young male model holding a rose thorn crown, rather than the more likely Ziziphus spina-christi branches.

Jesus was made to wear a crown of thorns during the crucifixion—to humiliate Him, to mock Him as the ‘King of the Jews’, and to inflict pain upon Him.

I have placed Jesus at the top of steps, and He is gently passing back the crown of thorns—a gesture of forgiveness as He rises above evil. I hope that my work will act as a reminder of how we can respond to brutality and evil: with forgiveness, as opposed to retaliation.

Meditation

We go on our way
and Jesus goes ahead of us.
We do not need to be afraid
for Jesus is risen.
God is love –
and love is more powerful
than fear or death or evil,
and we are greatly loved.
and we are grateful.
Thanks be to God for redeeming the word in love.
AMEN

Reading

After the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices to anoint the body of Jesus.  Very early on Sunday morning, at sunrise, they went to the tomb.  On the way they said to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?”  It was a very large stone. Then they looked up and saw that the stone had already been rolled back.  So they entered the tomb, where they saw a young man sitting on the right wearing a white robe, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” He said.  “I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.  He is not here.  He had been raised. Look!  Here is the place where they put Him.  Now go and give this message to His disciples, including Peter:  He is going to Galilee ahead of you.  There you will see Him, just as He told you.”
